In May 2025, Rehoboth United Methodist Church in Gallatin, Tennessee, launched a new Older Adult Ministry to support and empower older adults in the church and community. A New Older Adult Ministry Program Grant from ENCORE Ministry Foundation helped fund initial expenses.
Under the leadership of Teresa Gillham and Norm Kranz, members discussed the need for the ministry and explored opportunities to serve older adults. The ministry kicked off with a successful Container Gardening Workshop led by two Master Gardeners from the church. The event was well-attended and set the foundation for the ministry’s future activities.
The team collaborated with ENCORE Ministry Foundation’s Director of Older Adult Ministry, Dr. Richard Gentzler, Jr., to develop a survey to better understand the needs and concerns of older adults in the community and identify local resources.
The ministry was renamed Lunch and Learn to reflect its unique format of combining fellowship and education. Monthly Lunch and Learn workshops feature engaging topics tailored to older adults. Sessions run for an hour and a half, starting with a time to share lunch and connect with others.
Janet Jones, one of the workshop participants, said “Lunch and Learn at Rehoboth UMC is such a great opportunity for people in the community. No reservations are needed. Just show up at 11;30 on the third Monday with whatever you want to eat for lunch and be prepared to learn something interesting or helpful. I’ve attended one session on estate planning and another on AI. Both were informative and helpful. This time of day is especially good for senior citizens who have time midday, or don’t drive at night. And the folks at Rehoboth are so friendly and welcoming!”
