Made possible by a grant from the Golden Cross Foundation, the singings and other older adult ministries such as Bible studies, outreach, and holiday meals will benefit both congregation and community members in Pall Mall, Tennessee.
Travisville United Methodist Church in Pall Mall, Tennessee, received a $1,000 grant from the Golden Cross Foundation, a non-profit corporation and extension ministry of the Tennessee Conference of The United Methodist Church. Money from this grant is being used to start an older adult ministry.
Due to declining attendance, this 40-member church in Pickett County finds it increasingly difficult to fund programs and ministries. “Many of our loyal and financially contributing members have passed away or are unable to attend church due to illness or a disability,” said lay leader, Danny Byrd. “Thanks to the Golden Cross Foundation grant we are starting an older adult ministry program. Gospel singings, Bible study, holiday meals, and outreach to families in need after deaths, illnesses, and fires are just some of the activities that are on our To Do list when we get the program up and running this spring.”
Byrd and other congregation members are hopeful these new programs will be a blessing to older adult members as well as people in the community. “We are planning on hosting several gospel singings throughout the year,” said Byrd. “These are uplifting to all who attend.”
Church members also plan on using some of the grant money toward the church’s annual homecoming event as well as outreach ministries such as nursing home visits and sending cards and letters to the unchurched. “Never underestimate the power of a letter, phone call, or visit in someone’s life,” Byrd said. “By reaching out to older adult members of our church and community, we become the hands and feet of Christ, sharing his message of love to the world.”\n\n
