America is growing older. Every day, thousands of people celebrate their 65th birthday, and by the end of this decade, older adults will represent one of the largest demographic groups in our nation’s history. While these numbers often dominate conversations about healthcare, retirement, and public policy, I see something different.
I see an extraordinary opportunity.
The question before us is not simply, “How do we care for an aging population?” Rather, it is, “How do we embrace the tremendous gifts, wisdom, faith, experience, and leadership of older adults while responding to the very real challenges they face?”
The Administration on Aging has identified three broad issues that will shape the future of aging in America: financial security, healthy aging and independence, and social connection supported by families and communities. These are not merely government priorities. They are human and ministry concerns. And they are exactly where ENCORE Ministry Foundation believes God is calling us to serve.
Financial Security: Preserving Dignity
For many older adults, retirement is accompanied by uncertainty rather than peace of mind. Rising housing costs, healthcare expenses, prescription medications, inflation, and limited fixed incomes force individuals and families to make impossible decisions.
Behind every statistic is a person—a widow choosing between groceries and medication, a grandparent quietly helping raise grandchildren, or a retired pastor wondering how long retirement savings will last.
Financial security is about more than economics. It is about preserving dignity, maintaining independence, and ensuring that every person has the opportunity to age with hope rather than fear.
One of ENCORE Ministry Foundation’s core commitments has always been to identify emerging needs and invest in ministries that make a tangible difference. Our grantmaking initiatives, including our growing emphasis on food security and community-based ministries, represent just the beginning of that commitment.
We believe the Church has the opportunity and responsibility to become a trusted partner – through compassion, innovation, collaboration, and practical support – in helping older adults navigate financial challenges.
Healthy Aging Means Flourishing, Not Simply Surviving
One of the greatest misconceptions about aging is that it is primarily defined by decline.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
Healthy aging is more than physical health. It includes emotional well-being, spiritual growth, purposeful living, lifelong learning, meaningful relationships, and continued engagement in the life of one’s community.
Most older adults hope to remain in their own homes, maintain their independence, and continue contributing to society for as long as possible. The question is whether congregations are prepared to support that vision.
This conviction led ENCORE Ministry Foundation to develop the Age-Friendly Congregation Certificate (AFCC) in partnership with the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga College of Nursing.
The AFCC is more than an educational program. It is a framework that helps congregations intentionally become places where older adults are welcomed, valued, equipped, and empowered. Through practical education, caregiver support, accessibility improvements, healthy aging initiatives, intergenerational engagement, and spiritual formation, congregations can better reflect the inclusive nature of the Body of Christ.
Rather than asking how churches can simply minister to older adults, ENCORE Ministry Foundation is encouraging congregations to ask, “How can we minister with older adults?”
That subtle difference changes everything.
Older adults are not simply recipients of ministry. They are disciples, mentors, volunteers, teachers, caregivers, leaders, and faithful witnesses whose gifts remain essential to the mission of the Church.
The Epidemic of Loneliness
Among the challenges facing older adults today, none is more heartbreaking than loneliness.
Social isolation has become one of the defining public health concerns of our time. Its effects extend well beyond emotional well-being, influencing physical health, cognitive functioning, mental health, and even life expectancy.
Yet loneliness is not solved by programs alone. It is overcome through relationships.
Faith communities have always excelled at creating places of belonging, purpose, and connection. In an increasingly disconnected culture, that role has never been more important.
This is one of the reasons ENCORE Ministry Foundation is investing so intentionally in CertainAge.org.
The vision for CertainAge.org to become a trusted, interdenominational national resource where church leaders, caregivers, older adults, volunteers, and ministry professionals can discover practical tools, educational resources, research, podcasts, webinars, articles, and best practices that strengthen ministries serving older adults.
More importantly, CertainAge.org seeks to remind us that aging is not about withdrawing from community. It is about discovering new ways to contribute to it.
Healthy congregations become stronger when every generation is fully engaged.
Looking Beyond Today's Challenges
At ENCORE Ministry Foundation, we are convinced that the future of aging requires more than isolated programs. It requires a movement.
It requires congregations that intentionally embrace older adults as indispensable members of the Body of Christ.
It requires leaders who understand that ministry with older adults is not a niche ministry—it is central to the future health and vitality of the Church.
It requires partnerships among healthcare professionals, nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, foundations, and faith communities that recognize no single organization can address these challenges alone.
And it requires a renewed theology of aging that celebrates later life as a season of continued calling rather than gradual decline.

I have long believed that one of the greatest untapped resources in both the Church and society is the older adult population. Their faith has been tested. Their wisdom has been earned. Their experience is invaluable. Their calling has not ended.
If anything, this season of life offers new opportunities to mentor, serve, lead, advocate, pray, and inspire future generations.
