Food Security

Food security for senior adults is a critical issue, as many older individuals face challenges in accessing and affording nutritious food. Factors such as fixed incomes, mobility limitations, and health conditions can make it difficult for seniors to maintain a healthy diet. Additionally, social isolation and lack of transportation can further hinder access to food sources. From food pantries to feeding ministries, grand funding from ENCORE Ministry Foundation is helping churches and communities provide much-needed support and resources.

Food Pantry Ministry Fights Hunger

Calvert City (Kentucky) United Methodist Church is making a powerful impact in the fight against food insecurity, thanks to a grant from the Kent and Ellen McNish Grant for Older Adult Food Security. The grant, awarded in July 2025, has enabled the church’s food pantry ministry to expand its services and provide critical support to seniors and families in the local community.

Many of our seniors tell us they wouldn’t have enough food without our help. This grant has truly been a blessing.

In Goodlettsville, Tennessee, Connell Memorial United Methodist Church has anchored its neighborhood since 1902. On Sundays, about 130 people fill the pews, with nearly 100 more joining online. But on Tuesdays, faith leaves the sanctuary and takes to the streets. For over a decade, Joe McHenry, the church’s program contact, has led the Meals on Wheels ministry. What started as a way to care for aging church members has grown into a vital lifeline for the broader community. Today, the program delivers meals to about 60 homebound neighbors each week—nearly 80% of them not church members.
