From Psalm 71: 16b – 19a

Lord, I will help others remember nothing but your righteous deeds.
You’ve taught me since my youth, God,
and I’m still proclaiming your wondrous deeds!
So, even in my old age with gray hair,
don’t abandon me, God!
Not until I tell generations about your mighty arm,
tell all who are yet to come about your strength,
and about your ultimate righteousness, God,
because you’ve done awesome things!

An essential value of ENCORE Ministry Foundation is to ensure that every person lives a grace-filled life. But what does that mean? My mind pondered the answer to this question which led me to the notions  that each of us are of value, we all deserve that basic needs are met, and, most importantly, none of us are forgotten.

This led me to Psalm 71 for inspiration and guidance. The author of the Psalm (perhaps David) was older when he wrote it. He looked to God for help, encouragement, and strength. He finds, when he looks to God, that he has reason to be glad and rejoice — even in his old age. He found meaning and joy by praying to God, following God’s ways, and looking for God’s leading and help through this journey called life.

Who do we look to for help as we get older?

God promises to be with us each step of life’s journey. This promise is key when understanding what it means to live a grace-filled life.

As we age, living a grace-filled life can involve cultivating inner peace, finding meaning in experiences, accepting changes with a sense of calm and acceptance while cherishing every moment, and being kind to yourself and others.

Using Psalm 71 as inspiration, living a grace-filled life might entail:

Cultivating Inner Peace and Acceptance

  • Embrace the journey. Aging is a natural process and it’s important to view it as a journey rather than a destination.
  • Accept changes. Learn to accept physical and mental changes that come with age. Focus on what you can still do and appreciate.
  • Find meaning. As you age, you may have more time to pursue passions, connect with loved ones, and contribute to your community.
  • Practice self-compassion. Be kind and understanding to yourself, especially during difficult times.

Living with Grace in Daily Life

  • Practice kindness. Extend grace to yourself and others, practicing forgiveness and understanding.
  • Appreciate the present. Cherish every moment and find joy in the simple things.
  • Grow spiritually. Explore your faith and spiritual side, which may deepen as you age.
  • Seek wisdom and experience. Draw upon your life experiences and learn from them, sharing your wisdom with others.
  • Maintain connections. Nurture relationships with family and friends, and find ways to connect with others.

Practicing Tips for a Grace-Filled Life

  • Prioritize well-being. Maintain a healthy lifestyle through proper nutrition, exercise, and sufficient sleep.
  • Stay engaged. Continue learning, pursuing hobbies, and engaging in activities that bring you joy.
  • Seek support. Don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it, whether it’s from family, friends, or professionals.
  • Practice mindfulness. Engage in activities that promote relaxation and reduce stress, such as meditation or yoga.
  • Focus on gratitude. Regularly reflect on the good things in your life and express gratitude for them.

As we age, stuff happens. Friends and loved ones pass away. We develop more aches and pains. And we often have to spend money on doctors, prescriptions, and insurance. Sometimes we may feel useless and that our life has lost meaning and purpose. Living a grace-filled life reminds us that our faith is not found in our own strength and wisdom alone, but rather in a God who infinitely and eternally loves us.
