Each June, we observe World Elder Abuse Awareness Day as a day to acknowledge, support, and empower older adults. Human rights don’t age. As a community, we can ensure that older adults are treated as full members. Knowing the different types of elder abuse and the red flags is just a first step.
Types of Elder Abuse

- Emotional Abuse
- Sexual Abuse
- Exploitation
- Neglect
Financial Red Flags
- Unexplained changes in bank account
- Sudden or unexplained changes to will or financial documents
- Fake signatures on financial documents
- Unpaid bills
Emotional/Behavioral Red Flags
- Unusual changes in sleep patterns and/or behavior
- Fearful or anxious
- Isolated or disinterested
- Depressed
- No eye contact or speaks in a monotone
- Hoarding
Physical Red Flags
- Unexplained injuries like broken bones, burns, cuts, and bruises
- Untreated bedsores
- Torn, stained, or bloody underclothing
- Unexplained STDs
- Poor nutrition, unhygienic, or dehydrated
- Poor living conditions
- Lack of medical aids like glasses, medications, walker, teeth, etc.
- Inappropriate clothing for the weather
- Delay in receiving medical treatment
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, at least 10% of older adults 65+ will experience elder abuse in a single year. Every state has different reporting guidelines regarding elder abuse, but Tennessee is a mandatory reporting state. If you see abuse, or even suspect that an older adult is being abused, neglected or exploited, you must report it.
